The Greatly Expanded Tenth Edition of Pat Downey's Top 40  Music on Compact Disc  1955-2003

Here it is--the much anticipated 10th edition of TOP 40 MUSIC ON COMPACT DISC which now extends from 1955-2003. For those who purchased the 9th edition of this book, you  will  find  that the 10th edition contains over 1,200 new compact discs and over 7,400 new Top 40 song listings! As a consumer reference, this book provides the labels and catalog numbers of over 17,000 compact discs that contain the hits from the first 48 years of rock and roll. As you will see from the contents, one thing that has not changed since the release of my 5th edition is the haphazard approach record companies take toward releasing the music we all grew up with on CD. The purpose of this book is to keep you, the consumer, abreast of not only what Top 40 hits of the past are available on CD, but also to keep you informed of the sound quality of these hits.

The first section, "Top 40 Music By Artist," is an alphabetical listing of all artists who scored a consensus Top 40 hit single on national trade publications' charts. Listed below each artist you will find a chronological listing of each song that artist placed in the national Top 40. The year of peak popularity (not the year the song was released) is included for each Top 40 song title, followed by the label, catalog number and title of each CD that includes that song. This information is then followed by any pertinent comments peculiar to that CD appearance.

If you recognize a song by its title and not the artist, then the second section, the "Song Title Index" will refer you to all the artists that have charted in the national Top 40 with a specific song. The "Song Title Index" also offers a flag to indicate which songs have actually been released on CD (rerecordings and live versions excluded).

My primary consideration in deciding which compact discs to include in this book was the availability of a compact disc to the consumer. Specifically, in preparing this book I have elected not to reference the following genres of compact discs:

I. Import compact discs

2. Compact discs that contain obviously live versions of original studio recordings, such as "The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl"

3. Special promotional samplers that were never available for retail sale

4. CD singles

The decision as to which domestic compact discs to include in this book was made entirely at the author's discretion. Due to the burgeoning popularity of used compact disc stores, I am continuing to list compact discs that have long been out of print as well as the currently available titles. Your local CD store or reputable mail order dealer, such as "Discollector" (303-841-3000), should be able to advise you if a compact disc listed is currently in print or whether you should look to a used compact disc store to find titles that are out of print.

Compact discs available by mail order from "Time-Life" and 'Collectors' Choice Music" are also included in this edition. To order "Time-Life" cd's, call (800-382-2348) and to order "Collectors' Choice" cd's call (800-923-1122).

Every reasonable effort has been made to assure accuracy of the data included in this book, but due to the size of the publication, some errors will unfortunately occur. Please pass along any comments or corrections to Pat Downey Enterprises, 5692 Aurora Place, Boulder, CO 80303 or by e-mail to patdowney1@msn.com

I also wish to give special thanks and acknowledgment to Mike Hawkinson whose insight and encouragement helped guide me through the completion of this laborious project.

Explanation of Symbols and Terminology Symbols: (M) MONOPHONIC, with no separation in sound from left to right channel. (S) STEREOPHONIC, with a separation in sound from left to right channel. (E) ELECTRONIC, indicating some form of processing used to make a mono recording sound like it has separation from left to right channel. An example would be taking a mono recording and adding a slight time delay to one channel in an attempt to trick the ear into believing a song is really stereo. Another example of electronic processing would be emphasizing the high frequencies on one channel while emphasizing the low frequencies on the other. Processing of this nature must be done after the session tape has been recorded so that you may be assured of not getting a first generation transfer from analog tape to digital when you see the (E) symbol. Electronic "doctoring" almost always results in a degradation of sound quality. O.S.T. ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK. cd COMPACT DISC. LP LONG PLAY, which is the nomenclature originally used for the record album. 45 45 RPM 7" RECORD, also known as a "single." (X:XX) TIME in minutes and seconds. This is the exact playing time of the son-, not necessarily the time printed on the cd jacket, the cd itself, or the cd packaging. Even the time encoded on the cd and displayed on your cd player can be inaccurate if there is some "dead air" placed at the beginning or end of a selection. dj DISC JOCKEY. ¨  This symbol is used exclusively in the "Song Title Index" to designate that a title is available on compact disc. Terminology: alternate take Not the version used for the original hit recording but another very similar sounding take probably recorded at the same recording session as the hit version. cold No fadeout. countoff Brief counting of numbers such as "one, two, three" that musicians use to synchronize all members of the recording session to the start of a song. dropout A temporary loss of signal. fadeout Slow drop in volume to the inaudible level at the end of a song. intro Introduction Label Company issuing the cd or vinyl record; also the printed paper identifier on a vinyl record. length (45 or LP) An indication that the time differs from the 45 to the LP format and that the difference in' time is not due to new lyrics or instrumentation but simply an extension of the song before it fades out. medley Two or more songs strung together. noncharting Never entered the best seller charts. number Catalog identifier for ordering the cd or vinyl record. outro The final few audible seconds of a song. overdub A vocal, instrumental, or sound effect addition to what was on the original recording session tape. This is always done as an afterthought to try and strengthen the sound of a song. Because these overdubs are added on, they do not exist on the session master tape and are often overlooked when master tapes are resurrected for release on compact disc. remixed Either the instrumentation or vocals have been tampered with resulting in a sound that differs slightly from the original version. rerecording Not the original hit recording but a version recorded at a completely different recording session, usually a long period of time after the hit recording session. segue/track To continue without break into the next selection. truncated fade An abrupt end to a song that is in the process of fading out. version (45 or LP) An indication that the song in question had more than one form. This term is used to denote a difference in lyrics, vocal take, instrumentation, sound effects, or editing involving more than the length of fade at the end of a song.
